<nance> hey all :)
<sross> i see you got out in time
<jb> Hi Nancy.
<nance> barely ... haven't been home all day
<nance> jim, you're logging this also, right?
<jb> Sure just for backup.
<nance> otay
<nance> so where are the candidates? :)
<sross> glad someone is, i'm sure i'd screw it up.. this is all of the 3rd time i've used irc
<jb> Last time there was hardly a peep til 9.45
<sross> good thing voyager is a rerun... or i wouldn't be here yet :)
<nance> we've had a few LG meetings with IRC ... that's the only time i've used it
<sross> i'm going to confuse myself, i have irc, icq and IM all open and running
<jb> By coincidence, first prog I picked to try at Tucows was Powwow. Never looked back, all else is a pale shadow, but limited to 7 users plus self, also no Linux version, and Win 3.1 is essentially 'abandoned'.
<nance> i've never used powwow ... have heard a lot about it though
<sross> i didn't bother to reinstall powwow after my last format
<jb> S, what's IM?
<nance> i'm in the midst of reading all my email and looking at IRC :)
<sross> AOL Instant Messenger
<nance> i don't like IM...
<sross> i have frineds who bailed and went to aol, so thats how we talk
<sross> i don't either, but i can't get them to use icq
<sross> nance, you have icq running too lol
<nance> oh yeah, that too :) and tammy and i are talking on ICQ :)
<sross> are you easy to confuse??? LOL
<nance> oh yes :)
<sross> hmmm, this might be fun...
<sross> yeah, i have an evil streak :)
<jb> If you like I could log in by other ISP and be two people. :)
<nance> no no no ... that is QUITE all right :)
<sross> no, thats ok... i'm probably even easier to confuse than nancy is, i'm old

<Eva> jb is it you jim?
<jb> Ayup
<Ann> hello
<Eva> any candidates yet?
<nance> nope, none
<jb> Wow!! -Amazing- how many people -really- want this job! [G]
<Eva> I guess we scared them all off
<Ann> might be something to do with the short notice, the other one was planned from way back at the beginning
<nance> i tried (jim can vouch for that one)
<jb> Short notice true, but last one only a few showed up anyway.
<sross> only the ones already participating on -elections
<nance> if that
<sross> yep
<Eva> Ed Pastelak and Richard Tuttle - anybody knows them?
<nance> ed's out
<sross> it's going to boil down to name recognition...
<sross> I thought it was David that was out?
<nance> ed sent notice late last night saying he didn't want to anymore ... i think allen is posting something to -elections tonight... i updated the website last night when we got the message
<sross> i must have missed that one?

<nance> i'm back, sorry about that
<tammy> ooooh, that's bad Shelly
<sross> hehe, they came to my door last week...
<sross> yeah, it is, tammy... told you i was bad about writing checks...
<tammy> *laugh*
<sross> can't the guild get something like VPS and do onlline drafts? Ido that for hosting and design payment...
<tammy> they're working on credit card payment ... should be available shortly
<nance> are we talking about paying the $35?
<sross> i don't have a cc... they get me in deep doo-doo lol
<sross> yep, or not paying it, as the case may be...
<tammy> yep ... been there too ... this is a bad group of people
<Susan> I'm not sure how well online drafts would work for international customers (I'm in Canada)
<nance> heh ... i have 40 cents in my checking account, i had to "borrow" a roll of toilet paper from work because i don't have the money... as much as i would LOVE to pay the $35, it's not going to happen soon
<sross> hmmm, me either...
<tammy> *smile* ... figured if that Canadian ATM could get my American cash that anything was possible
<sross> i'd have to read the paperwork for my vps to see how it works... i've had no out of country clients, so i haven't had to worry about it yet :)
<Susan> That's why I like the idea of volunteer credits. Hopefully the people who are really strapped have extra hours available for volunteer work
<tammy> well, they exist now
<sross> doesn't the guild do that already?
<nance> yup
<Susan> I'm usually broke but it's mostly because I like to get new computer toys <g>
<tammy> yes ... each program has a specific requirement for its volunteers to meet to earn credit
<sross> hehehe, i was drafted for this...do i get double credits?
<nance> i don't think the NC has anything about getting volunteer credits for it :)
<sross> oh well
<sross> :)
<tammy> I was silly and raised my virtual hand on ops.... my silliness should earn me lifetime membership
<sross> yeah, it should!
<Susan> I think that any position that requires 10-15 hours a week on a regular basis should have volunteer credits attached to it, even if not everyone takes advantage of it.
<nance> sometimes its 10-15 hours a day
<tammy> unfortunately or fortunately ... depending on how you look at it ... it still just keeps on waving
<sross> if thats the case, i'd have negative credits :)
<sross> sit on your hands from now on, tammy lol
<tammy> LOL .... can't help it
<sross> knew that was coming....
<sross> i keep volunteering for the wrong things, i guess :)
<tammy> actually Susan ... some of the programs would require less than that to earn credit
<tammy> I don't know ... I was on the first version of the NC
<tammy> you can always come try out for one of the 23 LGs I'm currently missing
<sross> 23??? sheesh
<nance> ohhhh don't say that
<Susan> I haven't looked at the credit program, but I do think that there should be some minimum criteria that applies to all volunteer positions. (ex. number of hours)
<nance> there is, its set differently for each program
<tammy> with the new liest comeing on ... it takes 44 LGs + 5 AGMS and me to be full staff
<tammy> number of hours is sometimes hard to guage in the things we do as volunteers
<sross> nancy...tie my hands down, will ya???
<Susan> Why is it set differently for each program? time? experience?
<nance> heh ... i'll try
<tammy> different programs have different requirement ... need different things from their volunteers
<tammy> they leave it to the individual Managers to determine the minumum for their program
<nance> working 3 LG shifts a week is different from working 3 hours a week on a resource FAQ
<sross> the guild seems to be held together by volunteers... any ideas on how to bring in more volunteers, Susan?
Ann [ann(at)geek245.mry.redshift.com] has joined #hwg
<Susan> I think we might get more volunteers if we say how many volunteers and in what areas are required. Right now we get notices that volunteers are needed, but I don't think it's specific enough to get people to really pay attention.
<tammy> specifics are listed for some and in some places .. not universal though
<sross> short of smacking people upside the head, how would you make them pay attention?
<Susan> I know that just following the discussions in -ops and in -elections I have heard of a number of areas where I might volunteer. I wouldn't volunteer from a "we're looking for volunteers" notice, but if something specific interests me, well then I might look at it. Kinda like when I was nominated.
jb [~jb(at)www.tfabbs.org] has left #hwg
<tammy> yes ... but that's volunteering at the top of the totem pole ... not too many of those positions ... how do you get people ... good people to want to do the grunt work
jb [~jb(at)www.tfabbs.org] has joined #hwg
<sross> so you don't think the -volunteers list does the job
<tammy> or the help wanted page ... or the announcements in news
<nance> how would you get someone to be a LG? a job that is continuously being critized?
<Susan> I don't mind grunt work, I'm just afraid to volunteer for anything right now. If I'm not elected (and no that's not a good excuse not to vote for me <g>), then I'll look for other ways to contribute.
<sross> find someone who can't keep her hands by her sides...got to be more than one Tammy out there :)
<Susan> For a LG, look at the people who post in the group regularly and ask each one of them if they would like to be LG.
<tammy> have done that once or twice ... their answer (and rightful) is that they are already doing their volunteering in being there to help members
<Susan> But it's really not a big deal to act as LG if you are already reading the area anyhow.
<nance> what do you mean?
<Ann> how is it "not a big deal?"
<Susan> I mean that most of the time a LG spends on a list is reading the mail that goes through it right? (please correct me if I'm wrong, I'm not a LG). If that's the case, then it shouldn't take much more time to send notes now and again as required.
<sross> some of those who post to the lists sometimes spend a good deal of time checking answers to make SURE they are right, take one of them away to LG and wouldn't that take the quality of the list down some?
<nance> well ... its more than just reading the lists .... we work on list FAQ, resources, things like that... for the -biz list, we also do the job postings
<Ann> being a list guide is more than just sending a few notes now and again.
<Susan> The lists should be self policing as too content if enough people are in them. I know I take people to task if I think their answers are out of line and it's a topic I'm familiar with.
<nance> and if you are a LG for a busy list, then that's a lot of reading to do... and you have to read every single post and then look at it as a LG
<Ann> Susan, you were here during the December experiment, no?
<Susan> I currently get over 100 messages a day. Most of them I read carefully (except junk mail) and it takes a 2-3 hours a night. I read almost all of the messages in the lists I'm on now.
<Susan> I was around for the December experiment, yes.
<Ann> and would you define what occured during that time as appropriately self-policed?
<Susan> Ann: I was only reading two areas at the time, so I can't speak for the others, but the -business and -servers one seemed to run ok. I'm not saying that we don't need LG's just that some lists probably require less time than others.
<Ann> i see, so how does that impact the idea that being a LG only requires sending a few notes now and again?
<nance> speaking as the SLG of biz (at the time) ... it was unusally quiet in december ...
<sross> for the more commonly used lists, it wasn't all that great at self policing...
<Susan> Ann: I didn't say that a being a LG only requires a few notes now and again, I said that over and above the message reading that someone who is interested in the topic is already doing, it shouldn't take all that long.
<tammy> Shelly ... you're on graphics .. correct
Ph47F3 [[email protected]] has joined #hwg
<sross> yep, and basics and html
<Ann> I think that most of the List Guides would disagree with that sentiment.
<sross> and ops, elections and nominations
<tammy> how was graphics during December for you as a reader
<Susan> Shelly: I haven't been on those lists, but I'd guess that they have relatively high traffic, right? and generally people who are new to those areas?
<sross> prices was the worst offender...
<nance> heh ... being an LG isn't one of the easier volunteer jobs ... and it sometimes can take up many hours during the day
<tammy> not the Italian guy? ... *g*
<sross> lol
<Susan> prices <guilty as charged... ooops>
<Susan> Shelly: looks like you are LG for about six lists. That too me is too heavy a load. Asking someone to handle one list that they are reading anyhow is one thing, but just reading six lists would take half the evening if not more.
<sross> and at one point, tammy mistakenly sent me an email when i tried the self policing thing, which was cool.. but it also shows that being an LG isn't all that easy, mistakes can happen, and do, on both sides of the fence
<sross> i'm not an LG, i read those lists, contribute when I can and learn when i can
<tammy> Susan ... actually the lists biggest problem is people being willing to subscribe to lists where they can ask their questions appropriate ...i.e., on topic ... how would you go about increasing the promised topic specific lists
<Ann> Considering that the LG program is marginally 50% staffed, how do you propose to accomodate that?
<nance> unfortunately, we have a lot of LG's who have to work multiple lists... its impossible not to have that right now
<sross> and with all those lists i'm on, i'm really bad about picking what is off topic :)
<Susan> Tammy: that's a tough one because people are basically lazy. If they are subscribed to one list they will try to ask everything in there. I can't see any solution other than what's happening now.
<nance> (fyi: shelly is a member of those lists, she isn't a LG on all of those lists) :)
<Susan> Ann: I'd ask for volunteers from the people who are currently reading the list.
<sross> they do that...
<sross> in that message we all delete that they send once a week :)
<tammy> used to do that on an almost weekly basis ... volunteers from that were few
<Ann> and if you were met with the response previously indicated is common? (This is not an easy/pat answer, or it would have already been done.)
<tammy> no... we used to make separate help wanted solicitations on lists
<Susan> I don't think there are any easy answers. If there were they would be implemented already. I do have to ask, so look at it as my learning experience and not a judgment on you guys.
<tammy> not taken as such ... just indicating that telling people you want help ... doesn't get you the help you request
<sross> it would seem to me, that to be an effective LG, at least for me, I would ahve to give up a couple of the lists i now read...
<Susan> I think we should try to get people more involved with the lists. In some areas the traffic is fairly light and most are regulars.
<sross> and once I finally send in that check, I'd have access to even more lists
<tammy> if you LGed a low volume list ... maybe not .. but in most cases yes ... you do give up your own learning time
<Ann> Shouldn't a GB member be fairly well versed in the current status of most major programs in the Guild?
<nance> na, you can subscribe to other lists ... you most likely won't be as active on the other ones .... plus you have to keep in mind that you will get email from internal LG program lists
<Susan> Everything seems to point back to one basic premise: members need to become more active period..
<tammy> but how do you get that ????
<tammy> you can'f force people to give up their free time
<Susan> Ann: reading the info on the web is one thing. It doesn't really give a full picture of everything that's been tried though.
<sross> no, but it gets gone over avery couple of months on -ops
<Ann> No, but it shouldn't be a surprise that the most basic/obvious ideas have already been implemented.
<nance> we need a new creative inventive way to get the volunteers
<Susan> I've only recently subscribed to -ops. Hey.. maybe invite everyone to take a look at -ops? It's been an eye opener for me <g>
<tammy> boy do we get gone over on ops ... regularly ... almost as much as the logo program
<sross> almost
<Ann> Unfortunately, from my perspective most of the "ideas" on the -elections list have been things that had a candidate been even remotely aware of what was going on in the Guild, they'd know those weren't new ideas.
<Ann> um, we regularly do that (invite peoplel to ops)
<tammy> heck ... we sometimes BEG em to PLEASE go to ops
<sross> everyone is invited to join ops, just like all the other lists... maybe if the web page stated flames wars were a regular thing, you might get more subscibing to it LOL
<Susan> Humm.. what if we highlighted on volunteer with each mailing and on the website? The volunteer would get some appreciation, and people would see a little bit of what goes on behind the scenes.
<Susan> Shelly: LOL... well that's one way. We could hand out virtual popcorn..
<sross> don't laugh.. a flame war is what got ME to sub to -ops. And I've been tehre ever since, glad I subbed, too
<nance> i subbed to it when someone said "hey nancy, they are talking about something you did on -biz on -ops" :)
<sross> BUT, I've learned a lot about the guild, and the people behind
<tammy> and not in a nice way either ...huh
<nance> na, not nice at all
<Susan> how about a "make your voice heard" "have it your way" sounds of Harvey's theme
<tammy> been there ... done that too
<nance> wasn't that a theme to the elections?
<Susan> how's about we're going to charge a gizzillion dollars membership if you don't join -ops now and find out what's going on... err maybe not
<sross> pretty much
<sross> a gazzillion, heck, can't get 20 bucks out of most of them!
<tammy> good point
<Susan> How about listing some of the new things that are in the planning stages and asking people to make their opinions know in -ops if they want them?
<sross> did it...
<Ann> we do that with just about everything
<Susan> At least that way, you know your hard work is actually going to people who take the time to actually say something.
<Ann> <might want to read the ops archives>
<tammy> I posted both new charters and potential new lists to ops ... got less than a handful of responses
<nance> tammy: i think that had a lot to do with the fact that the whole shareware discussion started up and sorta got in the way
<tammy> have them all a chance to give their opinions on the rules they would be expected to maintain on the lists ... not a single response
<sross> i'm still reading those ones, tammy...some days things just don't sink into this brain.
<Susan> Tammy: I was thinking more along the lines of up in the first screenful of a HWG list message going out to all.
<tammy> don't understand..
Meatball [~Meatball(at)ip43.phoenix7.az.pub-ip.psi.net] has joined #hwg
<Susan> Tammy: you said that you posted new charters and potential new lists in -ops. What about posting the same thing as the first part of the monthly HWG newsletter and asking people to join -ops to make their wishes known.
<tammy> sent personal invitations to every list before the discussion started
<Ann> if we had to wait to announce pending business to -news, we'd never get anything done.
<tammy> even gave verbatim instructions for joining ops
Meatball shakes susan hand... congrats on showing up.
<sross> true
<Susan> Tammy: perhaps -news should be sent whenever we have news? but that's another issue. I guess what I'm getting at is that we need to reach the people who aren't even on the lists now. -news is the only avenue that I know of that can accomplish that. I'd prefer to see shorter -news messages but more frequent (personal preference). That way stuff isn't lost at the bottom of the message.
<Meatball> *I* read the whole thing
<tammy> me too ... I'm usually at the bottom
<Meatball> hey, the news editor positions' up for grabs... <hint hint> hehehehe
<nance> of course, sometime ssending out -news crashes the other lists :) tammy not raising my hand this time
<Susan> Meatball... talk to me after the 9th and we'll see <g>
<tammy> not recently though
<sross> lol tammy! Meatball is way to busy with all the other stuff (Mainly RFP)
<nance> heh, i'll hold tammy down!
<Ph47F3> What's involved in being the News editor?
<sross> who IS the -news editor?
<tammy> forcing Managers to give you news ... *v.b.g.*
<nance> maggie used to be it
<sross> oh
<Meatball> there is no *current* news editor the last one stepped down.
<tammy> we don't have one right now
<Ph47F3> oh persistence anything else?
<sross> wouldn't have to force tammy to give you news lol
<nance> putting together all the news
<Meatball> i just yell for nancy whenver i need news... ;)
<nance> shhhhh!!!!! :)
<Ph47F3> how many managers are there?
<sross> not enough is my guess... Meatball is a manager.
<tammy> only one
<nance> depends on the day of month ... managers are volunteers ....
Meatball is looking for volunteers for his program!!!!!

<Ph47F3> I'll bite. Where does one go to sign up?
<Meatball> well... we have an information page at.... (oh shoot... matt moved it today...)
<Meatball> here's hte old addy *(which is a copy of hte page)* /services/jc/rfp/misc/moderating/about.html
<sross> hit the site, find the link to it... pretend you are surfing for the fun of it... :)

<tammy> nite damon
<Susan> sorry bout that guys my internet connection dropped for some reason
<Ph47F3> I very good position to take, You being the list guide manager.
<tammy> and a glorious position it is ... *g*
<tammy> everybody either hates me or loves me
<sross> or someone hates you at least once a day?
<sross> :)
<tammy> sorry if I misunderstood what you meant
<nance> and then goes back to loving you :)
<sross> yep
<Ph47F3> but at least they know you . . . How many people know the name of the News editor?
<Susan> volunteers are never appreciated.. sigh! it's figuring out how to make it seem glamourous that'll be the hardest part
<sross> too late, we already know it isn't glamorous :)
<tammy> well I knew ... but I send em news articles
<Ph47F3> Oh Oh I know lets give them their own logo (sarcasm)
<nance> but it isn't glamorous :)
<sross> no more logos! lol
<Susan> that's cause you're already a volunteer... you're already caught though so you don't count
<laugh>

<tammy> no ... we lose em as fast as we get them
<tammy> constant turnover
<nance> sometimes we lose them in the process of getting em....
<tammy> shhhh
<sross> thing is, even if it was a paying position, you would lose them just as fast.
<Susan> Shelly: question... why did you volunteer? Seriously, if we want to attract more volunteers then maybe we should be asking why the ones we had volunteered.
<sross> I'm not a volunteer.. i got drafted to the NC
<tammy> she opened her mouth on ops ...
<sross> Kynn thought I might be level-headed *laugh*
<nance> i got bribed by kynn for the NC ... whoops *hee*
<Susan> Perhaps we are asking for too much time from any one volunteer and they burn out?
<sross> yeah, bribe is a good word
<nance> na, kynn asked ... i thought about it and said yes (without a bribe)
<Susan> ok so what's the best bribe?
<tammy> I'm sorry ... I can't handle 100 of em
<sross> or don't have thick skin it takes to be one...
<nance> for the life of me, i can't remember why i joined the LG program..... though i am coming up on my 1 yr anniversary :)
Ann [ann(at)geek245.mry.redshift.com] has quit IRC
(Ping timeout for Ann[geek245.mry.redshift.com])

<sross> ooh, almost a lifer...LOL
<tammy> I remember ... I volunteered cause it sounded like something I could do when they suggested creating the program ... and I wanted to return the favour of the info I was gettin on basics
<Susan> that's it.. guilt!!! For all that info you guys are getting it's payback time, sign on the dotted line and volunteer
<sross> I have volunteered, for the record, i sub to -volunteers, so far, nothing has come up, or i haven't volunteered for the right things.
<tammy> but that's why people volunteer ... because they value what they received and want to give back
<nance> i've been wondering exactly how that volunteer list is supposed to work ... i'm on it to
<tammy> ohhhh, Shelley ...
<sross> i thought it was to announce positions that needed filled
<sross> oops, spoke too soon, huh Tammy? LOL
<nance> i haven't gotten any announcements
<sross> me either
<nance> (don't worry shelly, we'll hook you in) :)
<tammy> that's my understanding ... how long have you guys been on the list
<sross> i have no doubts about that anymore, nance
<nance> i've been on the list for 2 months
<Susan> well then, perhaps the first place to start is in -volunteers. Anyone in any of the areas who needs someone should post something in there.
<sross> i dunno... a couple months, i thought it was only fair once I got drafted into the NC
<sross> who is in charge of the -volunteers list?
<nance> one of the problems with the volunteer list is that your name has to be "ok-ed" to be added to the list ... it isn't automatic subscription like with the other lists (at least that's how i remember it working)
<sross> yep, i had to be ok'd too..
<tammy> Andrew Stevens is the VC
<sross> i don't remember by who, tho
<nance> andrew stevens, i believe ... volunteer cordinator
<Susan> then perhaps we should make it more open? make it easier for people to join and see what's needed on a regular basis?
<sross> that might work, since it is a read only list, right?
<tammy> I don't think anyone is denied membership ... it's just how the majordomo is set for that particular list .. probably to check that they are guild members
<Susan> I understand there being some criteria before accepting a particular volunteer, but reading about what's required and volunteering should be open, no?
<tammy> I think it is ... it's just a setting I'm sure
<sross> i think for some thats why they don't volunteer, its a blow to the ego to offer and be turned down for lack of knowledge/experience
<nance> i'm thinking it would make andrew's job easier if he didn't have to ok those people
<sross> but, i have no ego, i have teenagers! lol
<Susan> But if someone volunteers and they don't have enough experience for a particular position, then perhaps we should look at what they might be qualified for?
<sross> i'm pretty sure it says something like that on the site, somewhere, but how many members actually go further than reading only what they need to join in the first place?
<Susan> Is it possible that part of our problem is that most of the people on the list are new and therefore are more on the taking end than the able to give end? (just asking)
<tammy> which would in turn require more volunteers to do
<sross> by the looks of -basics and -html, yes, there are always a lot of new people
<tammy> that's possible ... but we have a substantial long term membership too I think
<tammy> I will say that a substantial number of LG volunteers are very new to the lists and the Guild ... and are not qualified under new guidelines
<Susan> From a personal standpoint, I only read two areas because those are the areas where I'm trying to learn more. I don't read areas like html because for the most part, I'm pretty familiar with that end of it. I'm wondering how many people we have out there that have 2-3 years in the field.
<nance> that's including people who haven't even subscribed to an HWG mailing list
<sross> so for the LG program at least, you need the long term members, and most of them oppose the LG program anyway...
<sross> then that would be a list you could contribute to, Susan.
<nance> not necessarily ... just have to have 3 months membership under their belt
<Susan> Tammy: would some kind of apprentiship program help? If someone was new to the Guild but had enough "world" experience, could they be helped along by someone else who would then hand them the reigns?
<tammy> no ... membership minimum is only 3 months ... but we're finally growing beyond the list cop role and trying to move to a more educational offering ... which means the volunteers need enough knowledge in their list area to be able to particpate
<nance> LG training program ... in effect now
<Susan> I currently contribute in -business and in -servers, but I might look at volunteering in other areas.
<tammy> the 3 months requirement is mainly to make sure they're knowledgeable of the Guild and how it's lists work
<nance> both of those lists have openeings
<sross> and thats where th problem is now, right tammy?
<tammy> but .. is waivable to a degree for those with substantial experience
<Susan> I guess what I'm trying to get at, is that I wouldn't want to drive away people who wanted to volunteer if there was some way to help or steer them in the right direction so that they could help.
<tammy> yes ... exactly Shelly .. to be what we want to be takes people with experience and knowledge ... those with that that are also willing to give up the time they could be spendign making money are not many
Ph47F3 [[email protected]] has left #hwg
<nance> we have taken people to be LG's who are extremely experienced in their area of knowledge, but just don't know the guild that much.... and they go into the training program and we work on teaching them about the LG program
<tammy> Susan ... your point is good .. but, as I said .. that in itself takes more volunteer time
<Susan> Tammy: as I said I don't have vast amounts of time to spare, probably like most people trying to run a business... BUT I think that at least some would like to contribute to a worthwhile cause. I do honorarium type work for orgs for the same reason.
<Susan> Tammy: sure it takes more volunteer time, but if someone who is currently a LG for example, could spend a few months with a new volunteer and then move on, then we'd have an extra volunteer at the end of it.
<tammy> I agree ... it's what we've survived on for almost two years now ... for a long time it was just warm bodies ... including myself ... but to grow and improve we need more now
<nance> then there are those of us who are trying to run their own business, and finish their degree, and work a part time job and do volunteer work :)
<sross> So where would you pull the time from that being on the GB would require?
<Susan> Busy people can usually find ways to find time. I find it when I need it and it's just a matter of juggling things (kids, work, business, partner, etc.) <g>
<sross> Maybe I'm wrong, but someone new to the GB would need more time than those that have been on the board, just to learn how it works
<tammy> but this is every week ... and that 10 hour minimum ... really is a minimum
<tammy> to do it well ... add half of that again
<nance> and that's if you pay no attention to the lovely discussions that can occur on ops
<tammy> yeah ... add another several for that one
<sross> hehehe, as if you can...
<Susan> Tammy: I'm on the computer from about 8am to 12pm most nights and I read fairly quickly. If I wasn't prepared to spend the time I wouldn't have accepted the nomination.
<tammy> didn't mean to imply that ... just stating a fact
<Susan> For example tonight I'm behind in my mail, but I'll catch up tomorrow.
<tammy> me tooo ... but may take longer than tomorrow in my case
<tammy> it's just kinda funny that we through out these time estimates ... and they never seem to ring true
<Eva> Good night everyone
<Susan> tonight for example I got 130+ messages in. Some days are like that
<sross> night eva
Eva [eva(at)du48-5.ppp.algonet.se] has quit IRC (Leaving)
<nance> night eva
<Susan> oh well, I'll just give up sleeping and drink more coffee and jolt cola
<tammy> been there ... do that ... *smile* ...
<nance> 130 is a low count for a GB member (correct me if i'm wrong)
<tammy> in a day ...
<tammy> no daily traffic just for GB isn't real heavy by some of our list standards ... but the thought and time involved in replying is greater
<Susan> well 130 is what I get at my malico address, I get more mail at my sirc.ca address
<Susan> that's the reason why I don't want to volunteer for anything else until after the elections. If I'm not voted in, then I'll use the time I would have spent on the GB for other areas.
<tammy> speaking of those 130 messages ... I think I should go do a few of mine ... Susan it's been nice chatting ... Shelly, Nancy, quiet Jim up there ... you all have a good evening
<sross> cya tammy
<nance> night tammy
<tammy> nite
<Susan> good night Tammy.. I should probably head out as well, as we seem to be the only ones chatting
<jb> Bye T
<nance> he's alive!
<tammy> whoa ... there's jim ... nite
