1. Introduction
   Greetings!
   
   In this document, you'll find a list of sites pertaining to different "new" web technologies, including Java, Javascript, ActiveX, VBScript, RealAudio, Shockwave, and VRML. You'll also find a list of FAQs available on the internet as well as some questions relating to the list.

2. List Charter
   

   Please remember that this list is for the discussion of new technologies, including, but not limited to, Java, ActiveX, JavaScript, VBScript, Shockwave, Streaming Audio and Video, and VRML.

   
3. What's the difference between a Java application and a Java applet?
   

   Java applications run by themselves, only needing the Java byte-code interpreter to run. Java applications may access files just like a regular application. Java applets are made to run inside Java-enabled browsers such as Netscape Navigator and Microsoft Internet Explorer. "Applets" are, by definition, smaller versions of applications (this applies to any type of applet, not just Java). Java applets are restricted from accessing files on your hard drive because of security issues.

   
4. Will Java run on Windows 3.1/WFW 3.11?
   

   Yes. Currently, IBM/AlphaWorks has ported the JDK (1.0.2) to Windows 3.1, however, it requires Win32s. Also, Netscape has developed a version of Navigator 16-bit that will run Java applets. Netscape Communicator (Navigator 4.0) will also run Java applets.

   
5. Sun's JDK isn't available for X platform. Is there a port?

6. What's the difference between Netscape's JavaScript and Microsoft's JScript? Why won't my JavaScript code work with MSIE?
   

   They're obviously from two different companies, but the most important difference is that the two scripting languages are only partially similar. JScript has a few major (depends on who you ask) features that are missing when compared to JavaScript. MSIE, since it uses JScript as the scripting language, will not run many of the scripts that are designed for JavaScript. Check out Danny Goodman's JavaScript Mini-FAQ for some more information.
