HTML Special Topics: Tables

Are your tables a little rickety? Are you all out of alignment and having trouble nesting? Then this is the class for you. We will cover construction (HTML coding), layout, background color/images, accessibility and complex tables (nesting). Students will learn how to use table cells for image swapping, and how to organize a web page using tables to align and regulate page contents.
Outline
Week 1
  • Create a text table.
  • Create a graphic table.
  • (From this point through the rest of the class we deal with graphic tables.)
  • Assign attributes to graphic tables.
  • Align tables.
  • Add heading rows to tables.
  • Add captions to tables.
  • Set cell spacing, sizing, padding and spanning.
  • Add background color and/or images.
Week 2
  • Comment your code.
  • Control page layout with tables.
  • Creating complex or nested tables.
  • Add borders to tables.
  • Add frames to tables.
  • Add rules to tables.
Week 3
  • Understand basic CSS principles sufficiently to use CSS in tables.
  • Use CSS to control table attributes.
  • Glean a listing of some useful CSS table codes.
  • Comment your code in CSS.
  • Understand accessibility standards pertaining to tables.
  • Create an W3C compliant table.
Week 4
  • Understand basic JavaScript principles sufficiently to swap images in tables.
  • Swap images in table cells.
  • Program an image to change or 'appear' in table cells.
  • Making an image change, then change back again inside a table cell.
Prerequisites
Students should have completed the Introduction to HTML (H101)course or have solid knowledge of basic HTML as the first part of the course will be hard coded.
Requirements
Students must have webspace where they can post their assignments. If you do not have webspace, contact your Internet Service Provider regarding any space that may be included with your dialup account. There are also a number of free services available on the net. A good source for these is www.freewebspace.net or www.brinkster.com. Please try and avoid using free space where ads and popup windows are added to your page.
