Blogs and web articles are as much a part of the fabric of today's social media as Facebook and Twitter. And like all web niches, they present their own unique challenges to those who produce and manage web content. This six week course will give digital content and social media specialists, online community managers, web developers and project managers, webmasters, writers and bloggers insights into how to maximize these content resources. Discussions and reading assignments will be backed up with real world, online exercises in writing blogs and articles.

  • The emergence of bloggers as a media force
  • The relationship between blogs and articles
  • How blogs and articles fit in the social network
Week 2 - What You See Determines Who You Get
  • Why a blog's appearance is as important as its content
  • The role of images and links in blogs and articles
  • The SEO connection: blogging for bodies, not bots (while keeping the search engines happy)
Week 3 - Knowing What to Write and How to Write It
  • Developing your own style
  • Does content determine the audience, or does the audience determine the content?
  • Should you be a subject specialist or a generalist?
Week 4 - Using Blogs and Articles to Further Your Own, Your Employer's or Your Client's Goals
  • Financial realities of blogging and writing web articles
  • Do the ideas come to you or do you have to go after them?
  • The role of blogs and articles in establishing and maintaining a brand
Week 5 - Do's Don'ts and Doesn't Matters
  • Counting words counts
  • Get it right before you write: research, fact checking and intellectual property rights
  • Why it takes more time to write less
Week 6 - Watch the Blogger Blog
  • Throughout the course, you'll implement what you learn each week through assignments you will publish. In the final week, you'll put it all together with a blog/article package that demonstrates everything you've learned.
Prerequisites
Good working knowledge of the concepts of web writing. Having completed a course such as Writing Web Content (B123) is highly desirable, though not required. You should also have a good working knowledge of basic HTML. Previous experience with blog software will be helpful, but is not required.
Requirements
Web space and appropriate software for publishing articles and blog posts. If you don't already have access to a blog, you will be provided sources for free, user friendly blog software.
Class Books
Due to the speed with which things change in the online world, all required reading will be in the form of online documents.

How eClasses Work:Instructors post lectures, reading selections, and hands-on assignments once a week in the online classroom. Students can discuss the assignments with the instructor and amongst themselves in the classroom area. This format has no set meeting time, which allows students to attend class at a time most convenient to them, yet still provides logically organized communication between class participants.
