Intermediate JavaScript

This course is designed for students who have a solid foundation in the basics of using and writing JavaScript (either through completion of the Intro to JavaScript course or with instructor approval).

This course is an intermediate level JavaScript course, which focuses on JavaScript's object-based features, and creating practical JavaScript applications including:

  • Forms validation
  • Using keyboard events
  • Regular expressions in JavaScript
  • The basics of Ajax techniques
  • Dynamic DOM Scripting
  • Custom JavaScript objects

This class features current web-standards compliant scripting techniques using the DOM.

It's expected that students will have varying levels of skill and experience with scripting, so both a basic assignment and an advanced assignment will be offered each week for students to choose from in order to meet course requirements.

Applicable Job Roles: web programmers, and web application developers.

Week 1: Form Validation Basics
  • HTML form basics
  • The JavaScript form object
  • Using JavaScript for form validation
  • Using JavaScript with select and option
  • Using event handlers with form controls
  • Passing form data to functions
  • Improving form usability
Week 2: Advanced Form Validation
  • Using keyboard events for form validation
  • Keyboard event handlers - onKeyDown, onKeyUp, and onKeyPress
  • Keyboard events - using key codes and character codes
  • Cross-browser issues in keyboard events
  • String methods for characters
Week 3: Regular Expressions
  • Creating regular expressions in JavaScript
  • Regular expression patterns
  • Escape codes, special characters, and flag characters
  • String methods for regular expressions
  • Using JavaScript and regular expressions for pattern matching
  • The RegEx object
  • RegEx methods
Week 4: Introduction to Ajax
  • Ajax basics
  • The XMLHttpRequest object
  • Requesting the Data
  • Properties of the request object
  • Sending the request
  • JSON (JavaScript Object Notation)
Week 5: DHTML and the DOM
  • DOM review
  • Using DOM methods to access objects
  • Using the Style object
  • The className property
  • Usability and error message display
Week 6: User-defined Objects
  • Objects in JavaScript
  • Using prototypes and instances
  • Creating objects
  • Primitive and reference datatypes
  • Object properties and methods
  • Using JavaScript libraries
Prerequisites
  • Full understanding of HTML 4, including HTML forms.
  • Completion of Intro to JavaScript course or instructor approval.

  • Internet Explorer 8 or higher for PC users
  • Safari for Mac and PC users
  • Gecko-based browser for Window and Mac users: Firefox, Chrome
  • Web space to post assignments
