HTML Level 2

This course covers the Strict DTD of HTML 4.01. During the eight weeks, students will develop a web site of their choosing, become familiar with the HTML 4.01 Strict and produce valid markup.

The labs cover complex table structure, image maps, forms, embedding of multimedia and Javascript, as well as the future of HTML (HTML 5). Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) language is discussed on a basic level. The goal is to introduce students to tools that enhance HTML-based websites.

Week 1: Validation, Planning and CSS
  • Differences between Transitional and Strict document type definitions (DTDs)
  • Basics of CSS for styling Strict DTD documents

Week 2: Information, Usability, and Accessibility
  • What are meta elements?
  • How users access the Internet: Usability; Accessibility
  • Creating a 3-page website based on plans
Week 3: Complex Tables and Lists
  • Properly nested tables
  • Complex list structure
Week 4: Image Maps
  • Creating an image map for a website
  • Using phrase elements effectively
  • Peer Reviews
Week 5: Multimedia
  • Methods for embedding simple multimedia into a webpage
Week 6: Javascript Basics
  • What is Javascript?
  • Event Handlers
  • Image rollovers
  • Other useful Javascript snippets
Week 7: Forms
  • Creating basic forms
Week 8: Future of HTML
  • What is HTML 5?
  • Differences between 4.01 and 5.x

Prerequisites
Students must be comfortable using HTML 4.01 either through the completion of Introduction to HTML or similar knowledge. Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) will be introduced in this course. Knowledge of this styling language is encouraged but not required.
Requirements
Students must have website where they can upload their assignments. Students will need to have at least two browsers installed on their computer. Current versions of Internet Explorer, Firefox, Opera, or Safari are recommended.
