Class Name
Introduction to XHTMLXHTML is the bridge between HTML and XML. If you are interested in learning how to hand-code Web pages that will transition into XML, while still remaining compatible with current Web browsers, this class is for you! Students with little working knowledge of creating HTML pages by hand will be introduced to the concepts, foundations, syntax and structure of XHTML. The course will include an introduction to Cascading Style Sheets. All pages created in the class will be validated using the W3C validation service.
Outline
Week 1: Introduction to XHTML
Week 2: DTDs, Structure, and Nesting
Week 3: CSS with XHTML
Week 4: Differences between Transitional and Strict
Week 5: Tables, Images, and Hyperlinks
Week 6: Forms and other XHTML versions
Prerequisites
This class concentrates on hand-coding XHTML documents so WYSIWYG (FrontPage) programs are strongly discouraged. An HTML editor like Homesite or BBedit will aid students in creating their XHTML documents, but is not required. At minimum, the student will need a text editor like Notepad (Windows) or SimpleText (Macintosh).
Students should have at least two browsers installed on their computer. Current versions of Internet Explorer, Firefox, Opera, Safari, or Mozilla are recommended. Requirements
Students must have webspace where they can post their assignments. Ideally try to avoid webspaces that support banner ads or popup adds as this adds code to your pages.

Instructors post lectures, reading selections, and hands-on assignments once a week in the online classroom. Students can discuss the assignments with the instructor and amongst themselves in the classroom area. This format has no set meeting time, which allows students to attend class at a time most convenient to them, yet still provides logically organized communication between class participants. Students can apply for the completion certificate after finishing the class. Web Study certificate is also available. Click on the Certificates link on the top navigation bar for more information. |
