MySQL

This course provides students with a comprehensive overview of MySQL. Students will be able to install, run, tune, create and use databases. Basics of database applications will also be covered so that the student will have the tools to create database backed websites. MySQL is an open source relational database that is free for most uses. It has wide platform support and can be quickly deployed. MySQL has become a standard for small and medium sized organizations, as it is affordable, reliable, and fast.

Applicable Job Roles: web programmers, web application developers, and database administrator.

Week 1: Introducing MySQL
  • Understand what a relational database is
  • Compare MySQL with other relational databases
  • Understand the role of MySQL in industry
Week 2: Database Design
  • Understand data structure and entities
  • Be able to model data and build relationships
  • Know how to normalize a database
Week 3: Installing MySQL
  • Understand the MySQL open source license
  • Be able to troubleshoot common installation issues
  • Learn how to use the MySQL command line
  • Effectively use MySQL security
Week 4: MySQL Specific Syntax
  • Be able to use column types effectively
  • Know how to use special commands to effciently use MySQL
  • Be able to pinpoint problems and understand performance tuning
Week 5: Database Application Architecture
  • Understand basic client/server and 3-tier architectures
  • Understand concepts of data processing
  • Understand object/relational modeling for MySQL
  • Design an application model
Week 6: Basics of Database Programming for MySQL
  • Identify languages that support MySQL
  • Understand the CGI specification
  • Know how to initiate and terminate a database connection
  • Create simple dynamically generated HTML
Prerequisites
MS300 Intro to Database Design (or previous formal training with database design)
One of the SQL courses (MS303, MS304, MS302 or MS301) (or basic knowledge of SQL)
Knowledge of HTML is helpful.
Requirements
  • Database access to a server with MySQL -OR- Windows/Mac/Linux/Unix machine with latest production version of MySQL (free download)
